Who
is The Manual of Project Management designed for?
This
Manual was designed for the following individuals:
 |
aspiring
project managers-to-be;
|
 |
existing
project managers who want a refresher or to update their knowledge;
and
|
 |
interested
persons who may want to develop and manage a significant personal
(e.g., a house addition or new cottage design / construction)
or professional project.
|
The
basis for this manual was a series of public and private sector
workshops and a university course (at the University of Victoria,
British Columbia, Canada). Readers can be "project managers-to-be"
or interested individuals who have very little or no experience
in managing projects, but are intending to move into or are interested
in the area of project management. Some readers may have responsibility
for running projects and want to do a more effective job as a project
team member.
Why
was The Manual of Project Management designed?
In
an era of "trying to do more with less", it is essential
for the survival of many organizations and the cost-effective delivery
of public sector programs to properly utilize project management
principles. Most projects of reasonable complexity are ill-defined
and ineffectively managed.
Emphasis
will be on enhancing the individual manager's ability to achieve
project goals with limited resources amidst changing business environments.
We will explore how to maximize your contribution to any project
team you participate on.
Although
this Manual focusses on the fundamentals of project management
and only involves elementary mathematical concepts (that is, graphing,
and addition / subtraction / division / multiplication), nevertheless,
it is a rigorous treatment of the specialty of project management.
Each concept and technique builds upon the previous information,
so it is vital to complete all the assigned readings and master
the previous concepts and their application. You will find this
Manual extremely practical. It is a common misconception
for individuals to imply that the examples given outside their specialty
area, in some cases, are not relevant for their own practice. The
reason is that project management principles and methodologies have
a wide application both to many of our home projects as well as
to your professional career, since so many organizations have adopted
a project orientation to the delivery of many of their products
/ services.
